Donovan claims MLS Player of the Week award

05/10/2010 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week for Week 7 on Monday.

Donovan supplied the game-winning assist in LA's 1-0 win against the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday, as well as a goal and three assists in their 4-0 victory over Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday.

The Galaxy kicked off the week on Wednesday with a game against the Colorado Rapids at Dicks Sporting Goods Park and Donovan earned his third game-winning assist of the season in the 21st minute when his free kick was nodded home by Alan Gordon from close range.

Donovan began Saturday's match with an assist 22 minutes into the game when he had a hand in Jovan Kirovski's opener before his corner kick was headed home at the near post by Omar Gonzalez early in the second half.

Five minutes later, Donovan made the most of another set piece as he lofted a free kick into the box that found the head of Todd Dunivant, who sent a diving header past goalkeeper Kasey Keller to make it 3-0 to the Galaxy.

Donovan then put his own name on the scoresheet in the 67th minute when he got on the other end of a low cross from Edson Buddle to finish from inside six yards.

"We know we were the better team and we wanted to be aggressive and not let them dictate the game," Donovan told the club's official website. "They had the ball in the first half and our back line did a great job. When we had chances to score, we were ruthless."

The USA international has consistently contributed to the Galaxy attack throughout the 2010 season with an assist in all but two of the Galaxy's eight matches. He currently leads the league in assists with nine.

The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from The North American Soccer Reporters (soccerreporters.com). The group consists of members of online, print, television, and radio media.
