"It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Dick Williams today," said A's owner Lew Wolff. "He was a brilliant and feisty leader, and universally recognized as one of the greatest managers in major league history."

He joined Oakland as manager in 1971, when the A's won 101 games before losing the American League Championship Series. But they won the World Series in each of the next two seasons, beating the Cincinnati Reds in '72 and the New York Mets in '73.

Williams' final managerial stint came with the Seattle Mariners from 1986-88. In 21 years, his teams went 1,571-1,451. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008 by the veterans committee.

The St. Louis native also spent 13 seasons in the major leagues as a player, batting .260 with 70 home runs and 331 RBI.

Walters is 7-4 with an 4.27 earned run average with Memphis. Over his last 10 starts, he has gone 7-1 with a 2.81 ERA. The 26-year-old has seen time with the Cards during the past two seasons, posting a 2-0 record and 7.24 ERA in 15 games (four starts).

New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - LA Angels of Anaheim rookie closer Jordan Walden will replace Yankee Mariano Rivera on the American League roster for the 82nd All-Star game. Rivera was a player-elected All-Star and chose to skip the mid-season classic because he's been bothered by a sore triceps.
